The History of Skrivergaarden

Skrivergaarden at Leikvin traces its history back to the 14th century, when the property, then known as Løken, was owned by Einride Simonson Lagmann, a magistrate in Bergen. Following the Reformation, the estate became part of noble lands before gaining prominence in the 1700s as a district court residence. The current building, constructed in 1790, served as the district judge’s residence until the 1960s, when the court was relocated to the town center.

After standing vacant for nearly 15 years, Skrivergaarden was revitalized in 1974 by the artist couple Inge Rotevatn and Siv Jørstad. They transformed parts of the house into a cultural center and gallery while making it their private home. Today, this legacy lives on, emphasizing timeless charm, hospitality, and the enduring value of art and history.

Skrivergaarden is now owned by Antikvarisk Eiendom Eid AS, led by Leif Kahrs Jæger. With over 30 years of experience in cultural heritage preservation and a previous role as Chairman of the National Trust of Norway, Jæger has ensured that Skrivergaarden remains a vibrant cultural landmark.

In summer 2022, Ingrid joined as the estate manager. She oversees daily operations, bookings, and guest relations, while maintaining Skrivergaarden’s unique atmosphere and traditions as a hub of inspiration, culture, and connection.
