A hidden mountain gem in Hardanger
Combine adventure and relaxation at Brakanes Hotel in Hardanger!
Plan your trip to Ulvik and pair an unforgettable mountain adventure with delicious cuisine and relaxation at the historic Brakanes Hotel! Witness the stunning fjords intersected by the Hardanger Bridge as you hike up Mount Oksen. This 4-6 hour hike is demanding, but the breathtaking view from the top is worth every step.
Oksen offers a magnificent 360-degree view of almost the entire Hardanger region. From the summit, you can see the Samlafjorden, Sørfjorden, Eidfjorden, Granvinsfjorden fjords, and the mountain ranges of Voss and Hardanger. This hike is suitable for most people, as long as you take your time with the ascent. From the parking area, it takes about 2-4 hours to reach the summit, depending on your fitness level. Round-trip, you should expect to spend 3.5 – 6 hours.
The trail begins steeply through a spruce forest, and from Vindhovden, you’ll get an impressive view of Samlafjorden and Sørfjorden. The trail continues to climb steeply, especially between 400-600 meters and 800-1100 meters above sea level. At the summit, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the entire region. For the best view, continue to Veten at the southern part of the Oksen summit, where you’ll also find an old cairn.
Take your time and capture moments with your camera along the way, and don’t forget to sign the guest book in the mailbox at the summit. Avoid hiking in poor weather, as fog can settle over the peak, making it difficult to find your way down. Bring food, drinks, and warm clothing as it can get cold at the top.
You can choose to descend to Djønno, Selstad in Granvinsfjorden, or Stokksel in Granvin. These routes are less marked, so having a map is recommended. Upon returning to the hotel, enjoy a refreshing after-hike cider from local producers, followed by a sumptuous three-course dinner. For added comfort, let your legs rest in the hotel’s hot tub or take a refreshing dip from the dock.
Access and Parking
At the roundabout inside the Vallavik Tunnel on the northern side of the Hardanger Bridge, take the exit towards Ulvik. Once out of the tunnel in Vallavik, turn and drive on Route 302 towards Djønno/Tjoflot. Follow the fjord to Tjoflot (about 17 km). From Tjoflot, a small gravel road leads up to 250 meters above sea level, suitable for passenger cars. There is ample parking at the end of the gravel road.
Please drive carefully and respect the speed limits on the road between Vallavik and Tjoflot, as there are narrow sections and tunnels where children may be playing.
